Leftovers

Weekly writing prompt #136

Yesterday, my partner and I were having another one of our regular kitchen chats, in which one of us preps food while the other hovers around stealing bites (“collecting the tax,” as we call it). I asked him to help me come up with a theme for today’s newsletter. He pondered a moment then flipped the cassava tortilla he was warming up in the skillet.

“Write about leftovers,” he suggested. Not as in what’s currently wilting in our fridges, but creative leftovers. Like that poem you started one day then promptly stuffed into the proverbial drawer. Or maybe a piece you’ve been stuck on for months or years. Perhaps this is the week to fire it back up. Since it’s been left to marinate in its own funk and you’ve had some distance from it, you might find yourself returning to it with a renewed gusto.

Last semester, when I was feeling creatively blocked, I switched gears to work on a different project. It felt a bit like I was cheating on my first project, like I didn’t have the commitment to see it through. Yet my advisor affirmed this instinct, reminding me that a mental change of scenery can be just the trick to keeping the momentum going.

Buen provecho,
Jamie
